The Online Project ‘The World of Alexandr Ptushko’s Tales’ Premiered on 2 December

Date: 13.01.2021

A virtual exhibition has been dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the birth of Alexandr Lukich Ptushko, the legendary master of fairy tales in Russian cinema—film director, cameraman, animator, screenwriter, teacher, People’s Artist of the USSR, Alexander Ptushko (1900-1973).

The exposition, prepared by the specialists of the Centre for Visual Information of the Russian State Art Library (RSAL) on the Artefact digital platform that uses augmented reality technologies, will help viewers take a fresh look at the great director’s skill.

New Gulliver (1935), the world’s first full-length volumetric animation film, made the audience wonder how a live actor could perform with thousands of dolls. The films Ilya Muromets, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, and Sadko met with success when screened in many countries around the world. In America, Ptushko was called ‘The Soviet Walt Disney’ and ‘The Russian Spielberg’.

A fascinating section of the exhibition is the costume sketches by Olga Kruchinina, one of the most famous artists who created costumes for all the fairy-tale films by Ptushko. Work on them has been carried out over the years at RSAL, whose collections contain many of her works.
