On 18 January, the exhibition "Georgy Klodt and [Not] Followers" opened in RSAL

Date: 17.05.2018

The exhibition is dedicated to the creative work of the descendants of Georgy Alexandrovich Klodt, great-grandson of Peter Karlovich, who created the famous horse sculptures on the Anichkov Bridge in St Petersburg.

Muscovite Georgy Klodt (1923-1994) gained fame as a talented book designer; for many years he held the post of chief artist of the publishing house «Khudozhectvennaya Literatura». His illustrations were distinguished by an understanding of the era, style, and inner world of writers, and helped introduce unknown foreign authors to Russian readers. He became the first family chronicler, the author of books on the Klodt dynasty.

His son Evgeny Klodt—a famous designer and graphic artist who was fond of photography—painted numerous watercolours and wrote poetry. Many eminent Russian and foreign museums exhibit works by his daughter Alexandra Mitlyanskaya and her husband, the artist Valery Orlov. Mikhail Orlov is continuing in his grandfather’s footsteps, devoting himself to book illustrations and experimenting with various techniques and materials. Another grandson, Oleg Klodt, has organised an architectural bureau that is garnering international scope; while granddaughter Maria Klodt has devoted herself to icon painting.

The exhibition presents not only the work of the family, but also materials from RSAL’s collections: publications with illustrations by George Klodt—his books on the history of the family.
