Boris Messerer, People’s Artist of Russia, donated a valuable collection of publications showing various aspects of his work and family heritage to the Russian State Art Library.
The donated books include:
• The Gift of Asaf and Maya—a book dedicated to the creative legacy of the Messerer-Plisetskaya family and the connections between generations. The publication contains personal stories and archival materials about the renowned dancer and choreographer Asaf Messerer and the great ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.
• Life Passes into Memory. An Artist on Artists—the master’s memoirs, reminiscing about encounters with prominent cultural figures of the 20th and 21st centuries. The book reveals stories of friendship and collaboration, reflecting on the nature of creativity and the role of the artist in society.
• Publication for the exhibition Boris Messerer. Book Illustrations is an album of sketches, illustrations, and cover designs demonstrating the author’s mastery of book design and his ability to find visual solutions for literary texts.
• Publication for the exhibition Boris Messerer. Kaleidoscope of Time is a catalogue of works from various periods: from theatre sets to fine arts and graphics. This publication allows one to trace the evolution of the artist’s style and see the reflection of the era in his works.
• Exhibition catalogue Compositions and Still Lifes. Fine Arts and Installations is a collection representing two important trends in the artist’s work: graphics, still lifes, and sketches for installations. Through them, one can appreciate Messerer’s mastery of form, colour, and space.
• The Book of Graphics by Boris Messerer is a fundamental album bringing together the artist’s best graphics: etchings, drawings, and sketches. This publication demonstrates the author’s masterful command of technique and the depth of his artistic vision.
The donated editions are not only artistically valuable, but also serve as an important source for the study of late 20th and early 21st century Russian art. They will allow both the general public and specialists to gain a deeper understanding of Boris Messerer’s creative path, his aesthetic explorations, and his contribution to the development of illustration and fine arts, scenography, and installation art.
