On 26–27 September, the Russian State Art Library Will Hold the First Artbook-fest Art Book Festival

For the first time, the organiser of the Artbook-fest art book festival, the Russian State Art Library (RSAL), will present literature on the arts as a special, complex socio-cultural phenomenon that not only preserves and promotes deeper understanding of achievements in the arts, but also promotes its development. For over a century, RSAL has remained a source of knowledge and inspiration for actors, directors, and playwrights. The festival will continue this tradition and unite all those who create, read, promote, and discuss books on the arts.

The variety of publications and the rich programme will turn the Artbook-fest into a true celebration of literature on the arts and the arts in literature. Taking part in the festival are representatives of the publishing houses of the Maly Theatre, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS); authors from the State Institute of Art Studies (SIAS), the Russian Academy of Art Studies (RAH), the National Library of Russia (NLR), and other cultural institutions, and editors-in-chief of leading media outlets.

The festival will open with the Day of Theatre Books. Representatives of the library and theatre communities, and the publishing world will speak at the ceremony. A book fair of specialised publishers of the arts will be held in the open-air atrium.

The festival will feature book presentations, meetings with authors, public lectures, a creative workshop on art blogging, and master classes on various types of art. During the business programme, art historians, cultural experts, art critics, and publishers will discuss new projects, challenges, and the main trends in book publishing in the field of the arts. One of the key events in this sphere will be “The Theatre Book Today” discussion panel with the participation of representatives of publishing houses, theatres, libraries, and specialised media. The Children’s Literature and Archipelag publishing houses will host a children’s programme. A highlight of the festival’s cultural programme will be the play Nonsense by the Vakhtangov Praktikum Theatre based on the poems and translations of Samuil Marshak (directed by Asya Knyazeva). The festival will launch the 4th Monodrama competition for the best solo performance play.

At the fair, the Russian State Art Library will present its publishing projects on theatre and drama: bibliographic indexes, collections of plays, catalogues, albums, collections of rare theatre postcards, as well as new releases—publications dedicated to the Year of the Defender of the Motherland and the 80th Anniversary of the Great Victory, which have already received recognition and high praise from the professional community.
