Russian State Art Library has been a partner of the Moscow Art Theater School for 25 years, being a participant of the constant educational process supporting students with the help of its rich collections. One of the academic subject areas of the future costume designers is the subject of Bibliography and Iconography with the classes held in the Russian State Art Library by N.A. Ezdina, member of the Complex Iconography Department.
As a result of cooperation between the teachers of the Department of Onstage Costume and the team of RSAL we have interesting creative works by the students of the Faculty of Stage Design and Theater Technology.
June 26th and 30th the Department of Onstage Costume of the Moscow Art Theater School carried out examinations of the 4th year students (degree “Costume Designer”) and 1st years students (degree “Costume Designer and Technologist”)
The 4th years students defended their term papers on the subject of the play by T. Williams “A Streetcar Named Desire”.
The students presented to the Examination board headed by E.P. Maklakova sketches of costumes, color palettes, samples of the costumes for primary actors and also the working folders containing all the material gathered during the classes in the Russian State Art Library, such as copies of the photographs, fashion magazines, drafts of male and female clothes of the 1940s. The works not only reflected the knowledge obtained by the students on the history of costume, but also the spirit of the time and the style of life in the USA of the first post-war years.
The program of the bachelor degree course that the 1st years students were studying at was more concentrated and thus more intense. The Examination board evaluated the results of work done by the future bachelors in the second half of the academic year in various subjects – modeling and construction, sewing, technology of onstage costume, covering various historical periods and nations – costumes of Byzantines Empire, the Middle Ages and the Early Renaissance, the drafts of the costumes for the play “Hamlet” and also the works based on the Golovin’s sketches for the ballet “Gudula’s Daughter” with the music by A. Simon (the premiere of the ballet took place in the Bolshoi Theater in 1902, staged by A. Gorsky).
The students who defended their works revealed their knowledge in history and technology of costume design, their strong motivation and perfectionism in completing the tasks.
The teachers of the Department noted great ambitiousness and motivation of the students and the Head of the Department E.P. Maklakova emphasized the high level of works.
On behalf of the entire team of the Library we congratulate the Department of Onstage Costume of the Moscow Art Theater School on such a triumphant end of academic year.
We wish all the teachers and future bachelors many interesting projects, never-ending inspiration and success in their profession!
