On 8 December 2020, on the Russian State Art Library’s (RSAL’s) Youtube channel, an online meeting took place with the famous designer Yukhan Nikadimus, who reconstructs kokoshniks (traditional Russian women’s headdresses) following the tradition of museum samples, observing the techniques of 18th-19th century masters, thus creating unique replicas of antique women’s hats.
Yukhan explained how he became interested in the theme of Russian costumes, especially the decoration of women’s kokoshniks and crowns, which taught him sewing with gold thread, beads, and pearls and other decorative and applied arts techniques.
Participants learned how the master studies museum samples of women’s headdresses that he uses for reconstruction and creative interpretation and what materials he uses for his work. At the presentation, historical and documentary photographs, and illustrative materials were shown along with kokoshniks and crowns by the master.
