The exhibition was based on the costume design sketches completed as coursework in preparation of the film adaptation of Beaumarchais’ comedy The Crazy Day or The Marriage of Figaro. Each student created their own interpretation of the characters’ images, daringly employing unusual colors and experimental details in the clothing and accessories.
To aid in the preparation of the coursework, employees of the Visual Information Centre of the RSAL provided comprehensive materials about the Galant Style of the 18th century—when The Marriage of Figaro was set—in which the rococo style is visible in the art and fashion. The exhibition demonstrated the work of a new generation of talented costume designers based on the use of unique materials from the RSAL’s collections.
