Project “History and architecture of Russia in engravings”

The release of the CD “Moscow and Greater Moscow Area in engravings and lithography of 18th-19th centuries: From collection of Russian State Art Library” is the first stage of the Project “History and architecture of Russia in engravings”.

The collection of engravings and lithography is one of the most valuable in RSAL. It contains fine art lists and albums belonging to various engraving techniques: xylography, etching, lithography, linocut. The collection is based on engraved and lithographed plates that were assigned to Imperial Maliy Theatre by Leningrad Book Collection in 1927-1928. Also there are constant new comings from private collections. The collection of Iconography Division is represented by Russian, French, English, German schools of engraving with its main sections: portrait, cityscapes and landscapes, everyday life and human types, mythology, religion, allegory, costumes, artworks in literary writings, etc.

The Collection of engravings and lithography is formed with publications of 16th-20th centuries, such as Russian, Italian, German, French, Dutch and Polish schools and also Japanese and Chinese publications. Most widely presented publications are those of the 19th century. Along with mass publications the collection has author’s engravings, mostly belonging to Russian artists. In order to present them the new Project “History and architecture of Russia in engravings” has been launched by Integrated Iconography Division in cooperation with IT Division.

The first section of the Project is dedicated to Moscow. By now we have a new CD released - “Moscow and Greater Moscow Area in engravings and lithography of 18th-19th centuries: From collection of Russian State Art Library”. It includes pictures of Moscow and its surroundings that were made during 100 years – from 1760s to 1860s. The sights of Moscow and Greater Moscow Area are guided by scientific descriptions and annotations. The catalogue consists of 150 engravings and pieces of lithography created by Russian and European masters. It includes the biographies of engravers, lithographic artists, painters and the lists of publications containing these works.

The CD is of interest to researchers, employees of museums, libraries and archives, antiquarians, collectors and to all who concern themselves with engravings, lithography and the history of Moscow.
